The Sword and the Stone: Arthurian legend or Fact?

Located in the Montesiepi Chapel , there exists a sword in a stone inserted by a Catholic Saint named Galgano. At the end of the 12th century, Galgano Guidotti plunged his sword into the stone to use as an altar. Galgano was quite ruthless in his early years, however he turned to a more pious life in the Rotonda di Montesiepi.

After his death in 1181, the Celtic myth of King Arthur and the Excalibur flourished in Italy. If the sword dated back to 1180, decades before the "sword and the stone" legend, it would support the theory of King Arthur and his knights. The issue, however, is that the Arthurian legend can not
be proven due to lack of evidence. It will remain one of the greatest mysteries surrounding St. Galgano.

The Sword in the stone of San Galgano can still be seen at the Rotonda at Montesiepi, near the ruins of San Galgano Abbey.

Over the past few years I've had the chance to visit quite a few places associated with Arthur. It's amazing how many places claim a connection with him!
