This is a spectacular and scenic view, not far from the town of Coupar Angus where Scotlands first monastery, the
Cistercian abbey of
Coupar Angus, was founded by
Malcolm IV in the 12th century. There are only bits and pieces left from the monastery, which seemingly is being used in parts of the present parish church.

In the 19th century women found the Ley tunnel of Coupar Angus Abbey near the entrance to the churchyard. One went in and was never seen again, however in 1982 a local mason found the entrance again and went in some distance before finding a cave in. It is said that the tunnel ran a further two and a half miles to a souterrain at Pitcur.~ Geoff Holder
I'm not sure where, but I've seen that river before. It had to be in a photo because I've never been there.
ReplyDeleteI live in the United States on the Pacific side and I never run into anything like this unless I find it on the net. Old bridges and foundations that held things like abbeys. What would it be like to live with all that history all around. Really cool, thanks for the post.

I love legends about old tunnels and people being sent to explore them. Usually they're never seen again or reappear at some location miles away.
ReplyDeleteIt's unusual to send a woman. Couldn't they find a piper or a dog? :-) There must be hundreds of these places waiting to be discovered.
