The Frost Fairs in England

One of my close Blogging friends over at History and Traditions of England has published a fascinating, and yet complete new part of history to me, on her history site. The Thames River in England has an enormous history, and to me, I believe that a site like this has so many human imprints that you just have to keep coming back to experience every aspect of it.


The Thames froze over several times in Tudor England. Henry VIII is known to have travelled from Whitehall, next to Westminster, to Greenwich by sleigh, along the River Thames, in 1536. Greenwich was one of Henry’s favourite palaces; he married there more than once, and his daughter Elizabeth I was born there later in 1536.

In 1564, Elizabeth I practised her archery on the frozen Thames, and boys and men played football on the ice.

    Interesting. There was a show that I watched on the Discovery channel about some of this. They had very big events on the Thames then.

    Isn't that so interesting? I loved the part of Elizabeth practicing her archery on the frozen ice.
